IT designed from the blueprints

A luxury ski lodge in Alta that WebGuy has supported since 2007. When the property was expanded, we planned its technology from the construction drawings, and we still run it today, down to the phone in each guest room.

The situation

WebGuy has been Snowpine's IT team since 2007, back when the original lodge sat at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon under its previous owner, Dwight Janerich. Then new owner Brent Pratt decided to encase a new building around it and rebuild it as a luxury ski lodge in January 2019.

The new building had nothing yet. It was blueprints. Brent sat down with us over the construction drawings, and we worked out every IT need the lodge would have before the walls closed up. That timing matters. The cable you pull during construction is the cable you live with for the next twenty plus years.

What WebGuy did

We planned the network drops room by room: every guest room, the front desk, point of sale, the ski lockers and the back office. So on opening day, the infrastructure was already where it needed to be, and nobody was fishing wire through finished walls.

We built the lodge's network, and we still run it. Guest, staff Wi-Fi and point of sale operations are kept apart from each other, which isn't optional anywhere that takes credit cards. We also support the guest room phone system and call routing, and we work alongside Opera, the lodge's property management system, so the reservation lines up with the phone and folio.

The defenses have moved with the threats. We added wireless intrusion protection that finds rogue access points and shuts them down, and we keep firmware current across the network. Maintenance gets scheduled around the ski season, not in the middle of it.

Two owners and two buildings later, the people who designed the network are still the ones who pick up when something breaks. When a new crop of seasonal staff shows up or a vendor changes, it helps that your IT team already knows where every cable goes.

The result

Snowpine has had one IT provider since 2007. Nobody at the lodge has had to explain their own systems to a stranger or pay someone to rediscover what's already documented.

The building got technology designed for it, and it's been maintained by the same team every season since.
